ANGELO JAY TANGUILIG Friday, August 26, 2005
August 2005 - Mercedes SL Convertible | adidas SL
6.13 / 10 The SL stands for "super light" as it was back in the day when the SL line came out. Jay thought that the car itself, in all its luxury and grace, was a monster on the road with a bold design. The first things that caught his eye were the side vents and grill. The oval-shaped inspired his design as well as the overall 'look' of the car - fast, expensive and clean. The conversion from low top to high top is quite simple. The high top cut is the same material used for the inside of the shoe, a silky stretchy feel. It would simply be folded into the shoe and away from the viewer. To get it back simply flip the extended insole out and connect the strap. The shoe is equipped with a zipper to hide the laces - this being to achieve a 'clean' look. The most noticeable detail on the shoe is the side grill. It could be aluminum with a rubber backing for flexibility and acts as a midfoot connection to the rest of the sole, as well as an air vent. The back light inspiration is a strong material used for ankle support. The spears that cross the air vent connect to the 'back lights' for full medial support. The shoe shines, in black, and the aluminum grill blinds the floor.

BEN COLLETTE Thursday, August 25, 2005
August 2005 - Mercedes SL Convertible | Jordan SL Air
6.51 / 10 Expression: muscular simplicity and subtle luxury. Qualities: Compact, Athletic and aerodynamic.
This convertible Sl-Air offer sa thermo-formed outter shell with apparent car lines to give the shoe a precise and luxurious flavor. The softer interior allows the feet to breath in the day configuration while "cruising" around. Once on the playground the structural strap made of elastic neoprene
offer a strong ankle reinforcement and give a new flavor to the SL-Air.
Check out the details and you can see that strap come from the back, passes through the hard structure and secures the foot by a velcro fixed on the neoprene. The strap is obviously changeable and offer infinite possibilities of personalization - much like a hard top on the SL.

MICHAEL DEFOTO Tuesday, August 23, 2005
August 2005 - Mercedes SL Convertible | Mercedes Benz SL
6.93 / 10 Designed for Mercedes-Benz own line of footwear, Michael used many
different elements from the SL series in his design. The upper is a rich leather, similar to the interior you would find in a Benz, there's laser etching on the toe cap of the "leafs" from the MB logo. There's a molded heel piece that can also be considered the "wheel". Overall, this slim and fast looking low top shoe is a direct translation of the SL.

OLIVIER BERTRAND Monday, August 22, 2005
 August 2005 - Mercedes SL Convertible | Merco-Benz And1
6.98 / 10 Olivier answered our call with a clean, simple and luxurious shoe called the Merco-Benz And1. This is a drastic change in direction from the over-the-top releases by And1 in the past few years. The "block pad" design that accentuate the entire shoe reminds us of the full grain leather or bird eye maple wood trims that fill the interior of the Mercedes Benz SL. This simple feature makes the shoe look very luxurious and high class. The laser etched And1 logo + basketball has that classic Mercedes feel. The SL grill at the base of the mid-foot shank ties it all together by giving the shoe support and an aggressive side view. Yet another hint to And1 designers that you don't need design a super flashy shoe to get attention. Check out the details for more.

components from the SL like the V12 engine in the vamp
and the side vents on the lateral side. Elastic ribs
are used to keep the foot locked down without the need
for laces. The shoes look as if it is already production made and ready to hit the shelf.

JULIEN TROMEUR Friday, August 19, 2005
August 2005 - Mercedes SL Convertible | adidas Benz SL
5.44 / 10 Julien finished last place the last time he submitted for the Freestyle contest. While his style may not appeal to the general public, there's a distinctive style Julien uses that is certainly worthy of an exploration.
This time, he tried to create something a little more elegant although still unusual. Since Mercedes-Benz is a German brand, it only made sense for Julien to go with an Adidas/Mercedes shoe. He kept the "summer low top" in mind so it is more or less an open shoe. He also tried to keep the same strong lines of the car but added more curves with the adidas stripes. The curves are very much like the front of the car. The red back lights and the air cushion/suspension system are both obvious ties to the SL500.
Like the car, the colors are classy and elegant. The red is quite agressive like the red leather interior of the SL but noticeable when the shoes are on.

THOMAS HARTINGS Thursday, August 18, 2005
August 2005 - Mercedes SL Convertible | Nike SL Zoom
6.95 / 10 Thomas was inspired by the fluid driving motion of the Mercedes Benz SL. The shoe converts from a low top to a high top by the means of a collar that lowers much like the Air Jordan XVI & XVII Low. Overall this shoe was an attempt to capture the feeling Thomas got when he see an SL zoom by rather then a direct interpretation of the car and its design into shoe form. Check out the exploration page for more details.

August 2005 - Mercedes SL Convertible | adidas The Arrow
6.92 / 10 Ventsislav wanted a multifunctional shoe that has an edgy look, to stay close to the lines of the car. He thinks the best brand to represent the Mercedes line is adidas. The slogan is "Inspired by the best German automobiles, designed for the best German footwear". The shoe use an ankle holder with 3 postions of tightness, which is actually similiar to a door for the foot to get into the shoe. It also allows the multifunctional use of the shoe as a sandal as well as a basketball shoe. It also uses a seperate inside sock that has a thin rubber sockliners for guiding the foot into the shoe and assures maximum comfort. The shoe is called The Arrow, derived from the the Silver Arrow of the Mercedes line.

WAYNE RUSSELL Tuesday, August 16, 2005
August 2005 - Mercedes SL Convertible | SL Pro Former
6.06 / 10 Wayne wanted to give this shoe some what of a old school feel by going back to the adidas' trifoil logo. He also included the three stripes with pinked edges. Since this shoe was supposed to be convertible he found his inspiration from the Transformers. Therefore Wayne designed this shoe to have a robotic feel to it - hard edges on the outsole, tpu structure on the upper, rotating parts. The shoe has adiprene, torsion control plate (visible in outsole view), a velcro strap, perfing, and a padded swivel pad. Check out the detail page to get more of Wayne's insight.
