March 2006 - March Madness
M.P.P.
  6.52 / 10
"Underdog can win". The M.P.P. basketball shoe is inspired by this philosophy. The M.P.P. shoe is made of leather for durability, support and a mesh inner bootie for breathability. To prevent hazards of intense work and games repetition, the M.P.P. shoe features a Pebax heel counter, an EVA/PU cushion system, inspired by dog hooks, and a TPU arch plate covered of X-Static. X-Static fiber is placed on the tongue and in the insole. It is antibacterial and anti-odor, usefull during tough play. Two straps lock the foot for a better bearing. Motto tab, embossed arrow logo reminds to have self confidence for going farther. The M.P.P. logo show a rabid dog over an arrow, plus a motto. The dog is for underDOG. It's rabid to express the power and the madness of the passionate underdog player/teams. The arrow is for hope, to keep head up, to look beyond the limits. The motto reminds the whole philosophy : Bravery + Hope + Madness = Passion. More details here.

March 2006 - March Madness
March Madness
  7.34 / 10
The 3 lines which consistently appear throughout the development sketches for this design were inspired by a quick glimpse I captured of a Yamaha motorcycle commercial on TV during early rounds of the NCAA Tournament. The three lines do not represent adidas. This shoe is brandless. If the resolution would allow, you'd see that the sketches began on March 7th and continued through March 18th when the final rendering was completed. Much of this work was done sitting in my dining room in clear view of live TV tournament action. Hence, the spirit of the tournament is woven into the design process in an almost interactive sense. Though there are no overt references to the NCAA Tournament in this presentation, it is truly March Madness design.
This lightweight design is built for speed. A TPU shank and heel cup wall provide lateral support while an ankle cutaway and strategically placed ventilation provide breathable comfort during extra intense tournament games. The design also provides bold color blocking for proud display of school colors.

March 2006 - March Madness
Nike Team 007
  7.29 / 10
Being a senior in college right now, I have a lot of pride in my school and I understand the complete devotion that students and fans show their schools' teams. Although OSU is usually known as a football school, we were Big Ten regular season champs in mens and womens hoops which was pretty exciting. Although we made an early exit from the madness this year, our recruiting class that includes Greg Oden, Mike Connelly, and Dequan Cook should make us one of the best teams in the country again next year. My submission this month is one that can be customized to work with any school or university. Ohio State's scarlet and grey are the colors I chose to work with, and Brutus, our beloved mascot, is featured on the heel. I hope people enjoy the shoe, and that they are ready, because 2007 is going to be the year of the Buckeye. Click here for detail view.

Mad Nike is a shoe that combines security & comfort. Security thanks to an plastic cockpit that offers a good lockdown of the ankle. Comfort with an air system distribute in two parts for enhanced cushioning. The plastic exo-skeleton along with traditional lacing system offers closing fitting of the foot without movement. The upper of this shoe uses mesh as well to offer ventilation for the foot.

March 2006 - March Madness
Salinger Team Heraldry
  6.43 / 10
How much of march madness is about losing your mind? Very little I suppose. March madness, at its most basic level, is about a basketball tournament. Everything related to college basketball can be traced back to this annual event - right down to the shoes the participants wear. The NCAA tournament became my central theme. I took a brief look at how the tournament came about and what it meant to everyone involved. I wanted to take this information and apply it to a basketball shoe. Trying to pull inspiration from the NCAA tournament was an interesting idea but it needed a little more substance. I came to the conclusion that I needed to perhaps use broader thinking. I ended up researching tournaments in general and found that medieval tournaments were somewhat similar to the ideas of march madness. Both consisted of groups of uniformed people (teams) battling until only one group remained. Sure, the two events may not be exactly the same but there is a strong relationship. When designing the shoe, I took visual inspiration from various knights, helms(helmets), coat of arms, and various family crests.

March 2006 - March Madness
Zoom Max 180 Cinderella
  7.99 / 10
The Zoom Max 180 Cinderella shoes are designed taking inspiration from the underdog teams that upsets much bigger schools along the tourney. Cinderella is also one of the most famous fairy tales character in the world. Fairy transparent slippers have a key role in her story symbolizing the revenge of the underdogs. So I brought this feature into my design, building the whole shoe around a transparent thermo-formed plastic body. Other inspirational elements have been great college team shoes of the past such as Dunks and more recent Shox Stunners. The construction of the shoe also have some inovative features which you can discover watching the presentation, where you can also view quite a few colorway variations.

Zoom Flight Elite
  6.97 / 10
Nike Zoom Flight Elite is for the quick, high-flying college athlete. It takes cues from past basketball shoes and infuses them into a modern high performance shoe. The upper is composed of full grain leather and the Cinderella-inspired TPU support shell that is found on the Zoom Ultraflight. The shell is complemented with molded support structures. The mesh bootie hugs the foot for a sock like fit. The lycra shroud and strap conceals the laces when zipped up for a sleek, fast look. The rubber outsole uses a modified herringbone along with bracket-inspired pattern for traction. Cushioning is provided by Zoom Air in the forefoot and caged Zoom Air in the heel. The Phylon midsole has cuts in the forefoot for added flexibility and an outrigger for stability. Whether it's the Cinderella teams, the bubble teams, or filled out brackets, the Zoom Flight Elite tries to capture it and all the great aspects of March Madness.

March 2006 - March Madness
NikeID Zoom Finally
  4.82 / 10
This shoe was designed as a Nike ID, where each school in the NCAA Championship Tournament could have them customized to their school's colors and have their logo on the upper ankle guard. I originally wanted to make an entire bracket out of the shoes in their team color-ways down to the final four, but time prevented me. I designed the shoe with the white portion mimicking the motion of a ball bouncing. The yellow accents further enhance this idea. The bottom was designed using the motion of the foot leaving the floor during take off when jumping. I wanted to accentuate this motion almost like the streak lines you see in comics when something performs a fast rapid motion. I thought it would make your feet look like rocket-ships blasting off from the floor. These were my inspirations and this is how I interpreted March Madness.
