General Discussion, Vol. 2
This is where we cover a slightly wider range of topics and allow the Artist Series threads to remain focused on the respective competitions. Let's keep it related in some way to sneakers or the KG community... i.e. a new design rendering, a recent shoe purchase, a sighting of an interesting shoe, an encounter with a notable person in the sneaker world, or if you've been around here for a while, anything you've done which other KGers would find interesting.

Okay, the first General Discussion run was quite successful I think. And since I have some really big news to share, I thought it would be a good moment to start "Volume 2".

So what's the big news???

JORDAN BRAND HIRES DESIGNER JUSTIN TAYLOR
Justin Taylor, winner of the October '05 "K1X Freestyle" Artist Series, and for the last year a footwear designer at AND 1, has been hired by Jordan Brand. Yes, big news indeed. Congratulations, Justin! Can't wait to see the product my man.

For any newcomers unfamiliar with Justin's work, here a glimpse of his pre-AND 1 portfolio...

You're welcome, Ryan. I have some new ish dropping withing the next month or so.

Will you be in Vegas this coming week by any chance?? I'll be there. I'm actually designing some stuff for this company www.alexandermorse.com they will be exhibiting at MAGIC.

Not sure if you've seen it or not but they came out with this sick, shoelace hoodie made out of 450 fat shoelcaes...just google it.

Has anybody heard about these?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070209/ap_on_hi_te/gps_sneaker

I love this quote:

"The GPS sneakers, available in six designs, resemble most other running shoes. The two silver buttons — one to activate and one to cancel — are inconspicuous near the shoelaces."

It seems like an interesting idea for emergencies, but they seem to point out that invasion of privacy angle which I find odd.

As for Brent's topic, I stopped by the Isaac Daniel booth at WSA a couple Saturdays ago. At $325 for the shoe, and $20/month for keeping the service active, this shoe allows you to be tracked by satellite.

In typical WSA form, the company had a couple attractive young ladies handing out orange tote bags with company literature and a T-shirt inside. The literature says this product is ideal for children or Alzheimers patients who get abducted or lost. But I asked the girl "what if I don't want to be tracked?" She said, "you can't be tracked unless you push a button on the shoe to activate it." My first thought was, "Well, so much for the alzheimers patients. How many of them would actually remember to push the button, even if they knew they were lost?"

And if an abducted child were wearing them, I'm sure the savvy criminal would wonder what's up with the silver buttons on the kid's feet, and ditch the shoes right away.

It seems to me like it would be a very difficult product to market. I think the best market for such a device would be the miltary. Even so, I'm not sure combat boots are the best place for it. I would think a body implant would be best. But if you caught the latest James Bond movie, Casino Royale, you know that even that isn't perfect, as Bond's abductors immediately cut 007's implanted GPS device out of his arm.

I don't know. I will be surprised if the Isaac Daniel shoe is successful.
