I've recently taken up running, for 3 reasons:
1) as a way to stay in shape since I'm getting too old to play basketball the way I'm accustomed to playing. My athleticism is leaving me quickly. I can still score, but it's not being able to stop anyone from scoring that sucks.
2) becuase I was starting to get a gut and a double chin. Yeah, that's how I gain weight... my whole body doesn't fill out---just my gut and my face. So we had to do something about it ("we" being me, the gut and the double chin). By the way, they're alomost gone now.
3) the biggest reason---to better educate myself on running shoe design. I've always thought that my hours of time on the basketball court is one of my greatest assets when it comes to designing basketball shoes. Now that I'm designing running shoes too, I really feel a need to approach the process with more experience.

Right now I'm alternating between 3 different running shoes...
1) The Spira Del Sol. This is currently my favorite shoe. I love it. It has a stainless steel wavespring in the heel, and EVA up front. I'm a big fan of Nike Air for basketball. And just last night I ordered the Nike Air Pegasus runner from Eastbay. But I cannot imagine liking anything more than I like the Spira Del Sol. My 3-mile times are always about a minute faster than when I'm wearing either of my other two shoes shown below. Is it a direct effect of the shoe? I don't know for sure, but the shoe does directly affect my enjoyment of running, which likely improves my time.
2) The Spira Stinger. This is basically a racing flat, designed for elite marathoners. Oposite the Del Sole (above), the Stinger has two small wave springs in the forefoot and EVA in the heel. The shoe only weighs 7.5 ounces. See more about the Stinger here: http://www.spirafootwear.com/stinger/index.html
3) adidas ClimaCool 2. This shoe was in the back of my closet for about a year or so. I wore it on my trip to adidas village in the fall of 2004. That's how old it is. I started out hating it, but the more my fitness improves and the lighter and more efficient my running stride becomes, the more I like it. I does keep your feet cool but it's not for everybody. I know the current ClimaCool shoes are much different that this one, so these comments are probably irrelevant to current models.

Just read this about Man that ran around the world, thought that it kind of tied into what is being discussed, and was good see he was wearing adidas.

Recently have been interested in more super lightweight performance shoes. Mainly Adizero. If you look at how it's been constructed its quite amazing. They count the sticthes on the shoe, weigh glue and other small details that makes it more of a craftmanship/ engineering.

Outside of running and therapeutic/walking markets, Spira is not that well known. But they make great shoes. They contacted me to design a basketball shoe just over a year ago, but business/marketing decisions forced a halt to the hoops project. |

LOL, that's funny you talking about guts and double chins. I was just mentioning to TH about hooking up and shooting some hoops ( or at least try to ) because of that... |

hey Ryan...cool to hear that you are into running. My twin brother and I are second year ID students and have been running competitively for over 5 years now- through high school and into college. We are actively pursuing footwear design, and we love designing track spikes. Here's one that we did lately.

Got these in from Eastbay over the weekend. Took them out for 3.5 miles today. A little heavier than my Spiras but still a very good ride. Perhaps a little mushy. The full length air is very easy on the feet. The heel-to-toe transition is smooth as silk, but I almost feel like this shoe is better suited for a heavier runner (I'm 6'3", 175 lbs.). Maybe I'll like them more as I get used to them. But I felt no discomfort putting them on for a run right out of the box.

Hey Ryan-
My brother and I have been running in those same shoes for this year's season of cross country and track. They do feel a bit heavy at first, but are good for everyday training runs. The only problem we have noticed, as with Nike's Pegasus model from last year, is that the plastic arch piece on the outsole tends to crack and squeak after a certain number of miles. Overall it's a good, durable shoe. |

I just thought it would be cool to introduce the competition aspect of running into the discussion. My brother and I love designing track spikes. Right now Nike has a great line of track spikes, especially for distance runners racing events like the mile and upwards. Some of the most popular Nike models include the Zoom Jasari, Zoom Ventulus, Zoom Kennedy, and Zoom Miler, shown below.

Hey Pietro, Doug Padilla was a great U.S. distance runner in the 80s, but we're not related- that would be cool though haha. Doug Padilla actually still hold the U.S. record for the indoor 5k. |

Chris: I think the back of the shoe is too vertical. I think it would look better curved a little bit. And neutral running shoes are meant for people with high arches in general, and the flat midsole might not work so well with that. Just things to think about I guess.
By the way, I run competitively for my high school. Where do you guys go to school and what races do you run? Oh yeah and its always fun to hear personal best times...:) |

Wow Chris some of those times are like pinnacle goals of mine..I am a sophomore in high school and the only PR worth mentioning of mine is a 16:14 5k. That's awesome that ya'll run and then carry over your passion to footwear, which is such an integral part of the sport. If I ever get a scanner, maybe I can show some of my running concepts. Keep up the good work guys! |

Hey Chris D.
Nice ideas and sketches. I'm liking the grey/yellow colors of the bottom one. Travis- 16:14 as a sophomore in high school is great. It's cool to see other runners up here. Well anyway, I just wanted to post some running designs I have done this week. The first one below is designed to be more of a durable, trail running shoe for Spira.

This second design is more of a neutral running shoe for regular, daily training on the roads, etc.
