I ran the Tail Twister, my first trail event on Saturday. It was a 4-miler on a bike/horse trail at Hobbs State Park in Rogers, Arkanas. My time was 31:30. Okay, I guess. I don't have much to compare since I hadn't run trails before. I didn't realize how rough trail running is on your ankles. Not saying I suffered any injuries or painful twists during the run. It's just the way your feet land and push off at such odd positions and angles, it's rough on the tendons after 4 miles. I really felt it the next morning. It was fun though. I will run more trail events in the future.

After scoping out a stretch of the trail before the race, I decided the Nike Air Pegasus was the best shoe I had in my arsenal for the terrain. I figured the Stingers were too light on tread. I had a old pair of Nike ACG Air Teocalli with me. I typically use those for light hiking and such, but thought they might be a little too worn. Anyway, I guess the Pegasus is an okay shoe for trail. It has a fairly grippy waffle tread, as most Nike runners do.

Hey Ryan:

Cool to hear that you are trying different types of races. Trails are definitely a new challenge compared to road races. That's what i like about running cross country- we run our races in trails, fields, etc. The terrain gives you something to focus on and is a lot more fun for me. Nice job.

Nick: good to hear that you are inspired to run! Good luck on your race this Sunday.

At 6'1" 205 i was getting passed by much smaller guys everytime we hit a hill. well now its back to rowing for me where im one of the smaller guys. all in all i had a blast running this 5k and will probably do some more throughout the summer. thanks for the inspiration guys.

Nick -- Congrats! Glad to know that this thread has inspired you to run. You ran a good time too (21:46). Beats my first 5k time (21:58) by a few seconds. It will be fun to watch your times start dropping if you stay after it. Read and follow the advice the Padilla brothers have been giving me on this thread. It works.

I ran another 5K on Saturday as well and acheived new personal best (19:11). That's what Phil is referring to a couple posts back. Thanks, Phil.

Thanks to all you guys for contributing to this thread.

Go run!

ok so i ran another race last night it was just a hair over 4 miles. i ran it in 30 min exactly. even though it has only been a few days since my last race, and i didnt run in between, i felt like there was alot of improvement. I finished in front of some of the people who had beaten me on sunday, so that was a good feeling. I think the heat may have given me an advantage, as a southerner i didnt mind the 90 degrees while all of the bostonians where melting in the heat.

I just bought a second pair of 2006 Pegs. I got this colorway this time. If you're thinking about making a purchase, you might want to buy these while you can, considering what consumers are saying about the 2007 model.

Below is the 2007 Pegasus that's getting bad reviews. If you compare them structurally, the one below doesn't even look like as good a shoe as the one above. Almost all customer reviews are saying that that the tread is wearing down very fast. Some guys got as much tread wear after 30-50 miles on the new 2007 Peg as they did after 150-200 miles in the 2006 model. To read the customer comments for yourself go here and click on the orange "Reviews" button...

I wore Pegasus until the 2005 model and decided that if another air pocket blew out on me I was done with them. Sure enough...but yeah a guy on our team tried the new Pegs out and didn't like either. Quite honestly, I agree with Ryan that the 06 model looks better as well.

Man, all you guys posting times and all...its great. I am and have been plagued with knee tendinitis since March and can't run still. Hopefully, when the season comes around, I can share my times with y'all.

quick question on the pegasus shoes...how much of a difference does the synthetic mud-guard make as far as support and wear go? i noticed there's only a small strip (and a lot more mesh) on the 2007, whereas the 06 has a full guard from heel-counter to toe. just wondering, i guess.

Travis, don't fear buying the 2006 Pegs if you find a good deal on them. I just bought mine at the Eastbay Online Tent Sale for $48+shipping (sale's over now though). They are SUPERB, in my opinion. And you'll get plenty of life out of the outsole. The only thing I don't like about them is that the footbed height is quite level from heel to forefoot. Under my sockliners I've added extra EVA foam from the heel to the midfoot on both pairs of mine---just old flat sockliner material. I don't do it for cushioning. No need for that in these shoes at all. I just like my heel to ride a little higher in a running shoe.

Stephen, I would think that the full length mudguard does make a noticeable difference. I can't say for sure because I haven't run in the 2007 Pegs. The 2006 Pegs are very supportive laterally. But I also enjoy the Spira Del Sol with an all mesh upper, which allows the forefoot to spread very naturally. That doesn't bother me, so I'd assume the 2007 Peg would be fine in that department as well, just a different feel than the 2006 model. Those lower mesh parts of the 2007 might show dirt and start looking older quicker, however. It just depends on what's important to you in terms of support and looks. But judging from those reviews I shared yesterday, there's a better reason to be leary of the 2007... outsole durability.

If I was looking to buy a newer Nike and had unlimited bank, I'd go for the Air Equalon (below). It's getting lots of 5-star ratings at RoadRunnerSports.com

I run in the Nike Air Cesium. Its a pretty nice shoe. Its a motion control shoe but its very lightweight compared to other motion control shoes like the Brooks Beast. Some might find the lack of insole to be a problem and the burrito style lacing system not to provide a good fit. But for me its pretty nice considering I got them for 50.

$50... Yeah, I like that kind of deal. That's a cool design too. I haven't seen that shoe in person before. Never realized it had that kind of lacing system. Nice. What do you mean by "lack of insole"? Is it not molded or what?

I dont know how to explain it really. But imagine a regular shoe with the insole taken out. Then on top of the footbed, there is a graphic stitched onto the footbed. So its like I'm running directly on top of the midsole. The shoe uses a 3 degree varus wedge for support, rather than a 2nd density medial post. So that wedge which I think runs full length, pretty much acts as a built in orthotic. I guess the thinking was that the shoe is suppose to get rid of orthotics thus there is no need for an insole. Or maybe what Im seeing is an insole but its directly molded in there and definitely can not be removed.

Heres some more info at this link. Just scroll down and read the post by Ernest@Nike. He kind of explains some cool things about the shoe and the upcoming Cesium 2.

Hey Guys,

I'm looking for a running shoe. I have a medium arch, and I have some issues with my heels and Achilles, so I'm looking for something flexible with good cushioning. The shoe doesn't have to be ultra-light, but it shouldn't be heavy. I will probably be running 2-3 miles a day in them. If possible, I'd like them to be $50-60.

Ryan: I was considering those Pegasus 2006, do you think those would be suitable?

Thanks for any help in advance

4.0 if you look on page two of this thread there is a pic of the shoes. they take a little getting used to because you will use muscles in your foot you dont normaly use. I found that my feet where sore for the 1st 2 weeks that i wore them. but now i dont notice any extra soreness, other than that which normally follows a good workout.

Ben: Im no expert in running long distances and the footwear required for them, but I would suggest that if you have on going issues with your heels and achilles, is that you should go to a store dedicated to running and ask the people working there for advise. As well as try out different models. The sales people will probably try to sell you the new thing with all the bells and whistles, but If you get a good enough salesperson I can almost bet they can find something or recommend something at your price point.

Ben: Rich makes a really good point about talking to the sales people at the store. You should check out Marathon sports There are a few of them around town. they will look at the way you plant your foot on each stride and then recomend a few different shoes that will work for you. I have found the sales people there very knowledgeable and helpful.

Ben, if you go to a running shop, they can definitely give you sound advice on what type of shoe to buy. If they take the right approach, you'll be given some suggestions (mabe 3 or 4 shoes), then left to make the decision on your own based on how they feel. My experience has taught me that some running shop employees would prefer to sell you something other than a Nike. Many running "purists" are skeptical of Nike, because of their slick marketing and their tendency to occasionally release shoes that bomb, performance wise. But that's part of what makes Nike who they are. They don't rest on the laurels. They try new things. They take risks. A by-product of that approach is occasional failure. Other brands known mostly for running (Asics, Brooks, New Balance) tend to take fewer risks and make more minimal changes in their shoes from year to year. So, if you're considering a Nike, the important thing is to do your homework read some reviews, and make sure you buy the one that is right for you.

My opinion is, like Rich's, that you should not buy any Nike Free as your primary running shoe. They simply aren't made for that. They are designed as an alternate shoe, for occasional use in building foot strength. But I wouldn't argue with Nick about his experience with the Free. In fact, I know a little bit about Nick. He is probably very fit and, being in his early 20s, is at a time in his life in which he could probably run just as efficiently in a $20 shoe from Wal-Mart (did I just say that?).

Anyway, you've heard me and others sing the praises of the 2006 Pegasus. I feel good recommending that shoe for you. However, you said you want something flexible. The Pegasus is not known for being flexible. But you may not need as much flexibility as you think you do. I can assure you, however, that you would get many miles of great cushioning out of them.

The reason I say that about flexibility is because my forefoot is where I feel pain when I'm wearing an underperforming shoe. I've never felt that pain wearing the 06 Pegs. In fact, I feel like it's the shoe's rigidity combined with the full-lenth Air, that makes it such a good shoe for me. I do one thing to my Pegs to customize the fit, however. I add a layer of EVA foam (about 3mm thick) under the back half of the sockliner just to raise my heel a bit.

Lastly, don't let me push you toward Nike just because I like them. I've almost pulled the trigger on buying Brooks and Mizuno at different times. But my history of success with Nike in both hoops and running tends to win out in the end.

Wow, thanks for all the help guys. I did consider the free, but after reading Prof. K's review of it, it did seem like a training shoe.

Nick: I'll check out Marathon Sports. I've heard that place is good.

Ryan: I can't believe I forgot to say I tore my ACL last year, so I also have knee issues. The majority of the reviews I've read of the shoe say the shoes stable base and durability make it a good shoe for runners with knee problems. Seems like the shoe for me.

I'll probably check out marathon sports and then buy the shoe I like online, which will prob be the Pegasus. Too bad I can't find a size 10 of the Clima version of them. Those are pretty damn hot!

For any continued discussion on the basketball shoe template, jump over to the "General Discussion, Vol. 2" thread. I've just posted it over there as well.

Jason, to answer your question... Jason Mayden, from Jordan Brand, originally created the basketball shoe template. I think he posted it here himself. It's been floating around for a couple years since. I put it in the 4-up layout. A few months ago I wanted one for running shoes, so I built the running shoe template based on Jason's layout.

Here's one of Jay-May's renderings I laid over the template just to see how closely he followed it. What do you think?

Ben, nice purchase. Here's what I'd like to know about that shoe after you've worn it a while. How does the duralon hold up? That's the part of your outsole that actualy feels more like EVA than rubber. Even though it's called "Duralon", I can't help but wonder how a foamy outsole material like that would actually hold up as well as their BRS 1000, or even rubber for that matter.

I'm not saying, ultimately, that this shoe should score high points in durability. It's not marketed as such. It's sleek design is more like a racing flat than that of the Pegasus. And it is indeed marketed as a lightweight racing shoe. In one review I read, the reviewer said he set a PR in the Boston Marathon in the Zoom Elite III.

Anyway, let us know, Ben, how the Duralon holds up after, say... 100 miles or so.

Compared to reebok it shows a different way to run, I've done road cycling during my years at the university and the fact to go on the road on your own to relax your mind after many hours of study was cool too, anyway both ways to think at running are possible, you don't have to pick one of them as the best, just pick the one is best FOR YOU...and run...I should run too maybe ;)

Anyway I don't think this is politically uncorrect...in Italy we have a TV ad (broadcasted all day long) of a chewing gum that feauteres a small fox that is called to blow down a fire into a wood...it chews the gum and then blows down the fire with a frozen gas coming out of its .... imagine that...to me it is a REALLY SILLY ad, since 1) if you chew a gum, it could be as fresh as you want but the frozen gas can't come out from the low...;) 2) I don't remember the name of the product, cause the ad is too strong and recognisable itself, 3) it shows no creativity since this kind of things always make laugh people but there no bottom line on that...you can bring the worst things in life to market a product and then find something worse than the worse...but to me it is more difficult to make people laugh or think with smart things, and it also shows more creativity.
Afetr a few month now they have censored it and you can find 2 versions...censored or not it's just the lack of creativity that bothers me.

Okay, here's my take... I'm not offended by it AT ALL. I say this to anyone who's crying about how tasteless the ad is... Have you not watched murder mystery movies & TV shows? Is it okay for you to be entertained by murder stories, but NOT okay for Pearl Izumi to reference those same stories to sell shoes? Please, people, lighten up!

Nothing wrong with a little dark humor.

I could see it offending someone who lost a loved one who was close to them in this way...

I feel like a lot of places outside of the United States have advertisements that explore evoking emotional reactions. Im sure some people here for outside the US could vouch for that. You've probably seen some on You Tube. Most of the ads you see have a single level of reading. This ad goes beyond to visual, though that picture is tough. I love the ad.

Brent, I hear you, but the number of people who've had loved ones die and be found in alley or forrests is extremely miniscule.

Sarah, the complaints were being posted on various running chat boards. Many people feel the ad is "tasteless". However, as I read a little deeper, there seems to be as many offended by the notion that Pearl Izumi is asserting an elitist attitude — that "runners" are a higher quality of human being than "joggers", and that the difference is indicated by WHERE you might run — "pedestrian walkways" vs. "back alleys & wooded areas". Some folks just read too deep into things and take things too literally.

I got hot feets suddenly, the air flow or the shoe don't breath that good to cool my feets. Going to bring them back tommorrow. I better buy some nikes.

Ryan: I love running on the beach. Unfortunately, I went to the Virgin Islands this summer and couldn't run because of my knee tendinitis. Hopefully it will be better soon..Anyway..When I went to Hawaii I ran a shorter run only like a mile in bare feet and it was a great feeling. I would guess it might depend on your feet, like how strong they are and if you can take the impact. You probably wouldn't want to run 4-7 miles barefoot anywhere :)

By the way guys, from Tuesday through Sunday, I will be at the University of Colorado in Boulder with my cross country team. If I have access to a computer, I will update ya'll. It should be an awesome experience, and I will definitely share some of the things I learn with ya'll.

Guys, I ran 6 miles this morning before work, and at about 10:00 AM had a kidney stone attack---my first one. Never felt pain like that before. I almost passed out from it. Ryan: Hope you're doing better by now I'm sure it was really painful.

I am back from X Country camp at Colorado University. I got to learn from a great coach, Jay Johnson, and meet some of their fastest guys and interact with them for 5 days, which was really cool.

Their team runs in Nike, and most seemed fine with that. With Nike's running shoe reputation in the past, it seemed odd to me that none of the guys ran in Asics or anything else.

I learned a lot about all different types of workouts and how to run in such a way as to maximize speed for important races. If anyone wants to hear the specifics, I'll explain in crazy detail.

Also, I was thinking it might be cool to post up some of our running and supplemental workouts on here and give each other advice about how to maximize our potentials.

Thanks to all you well-wishers. I still have not passed the kidney stone. But it's currently lodged in a position that's only causing minimal discomfort. I can feel bolts of pain when it moves. That's always while I'm peeing (pardon the expression). Went back to the urologist today. He put me on Flomax until it passes and said get back to running. So I returned from an easy 3.5 mile run about a half-hour ago. Gotta keep drinking lots of water. Today I drank about a gallon, plus a 32 oz lemonade (for the citric acid). Probably drink another 32 oz water before bed.

Be sure to stay hydrated during this hot summer. My Monday was an experience I hope none of you have. The urologist said in addition to water, citric acid (lemonade best source) helps keep stones at bay.

Travis, post all you want related to running and/or running shoes... or kidney stones, ha-ha. Anything useful and/or intersting is welcome.

In reference to one of your points, I'm not surprised you didn't see any Asics shoes in Colorado. Asics doesn't have a strong presence in collegiate athletics. They're a bit like New Balance in terms of endorsements... at least in the U.S. They do sign a select few pro athletes in baseball (Ichiro is one). Asics runs traditional mag ads but their lifeline is simply a consistent delivery of great running shoes for the paying public.

College sports programs typically use shoes/gear provided or discounted by big brands such as Nike or adidas.

Ran another 5K race today. Ran a 19:49. Not a PR time, as it was on a somewhat hilly course. But I finished ahead of a couple people who've always beat me in the past, so I think it was probably my best run, all considered. Felt like I was running very efficiently the whole way and had plenty juice for the sprint at the finish.

I don't rembmber when this shoe came out. I'm guessing at least 4 years ago. But it's interesting how trailrunner design has gone in an opposite direction. Nowadays things look more techie, with mesh and exposed piecing; like a road shoe, but more gnarly. Seems many companies have conceded to the fact that water will make it's way into an all-terrain shoe, and are designing the shoes to wick it out instead of keep it out.

By the way, this add was dumped by some mags because is was too morbid...

Hey everyone:

Sorry for not posting here in a while- I have just been very busy getting back into the college routine, classwork, running, etc. This season, our xc team gets these three shoes to run in: Nike Air Max Moto+ 5 (upper left), Air Pegasus+ 2007 (upper right), and the Air Structure Triax 10 (lower left). They are all Nike+ Ipod compatible, but no one on the team will ever use that feature. All three of the shoes have nice rides and feel pretty good. The xc spikes in the lower right corner are the Nike Zoom Kennedy XC- by far my favorite xc racing shoe. It feels awesome. I have been racing in it since high school and throughout college. We usually get a new pair each season.

My summer training went very well, with the highest weeks around 90 miles/wk. We have our first xc race next week, so I'll be sure to keep you guys updated.

I was suprised to see any improvement over my time from 2 months ago since i have not run except for a few times. I have been rowing competitively all summer but i wasnt sure that would translate to a faster running time.

Today bought the Pegasus 2007. Wanted to buy Zoom Air or the Triax X but they didnt had them in my size. I also tested Adidas supernova but those got a big bump in the front of the shoe just before you set off. While the bump is also in the Nike but much less.

I really wanted Zoom Air cause i got old version and its the top of the line.

Chung, I was about to tell you the Pegasus 2007 DOES have Zoom Air in the forefoot. But I researched it, and it does not. However, this is the first Pegasus to have separate Air Sole units in the heel and forefoot. In the bast it just been one long Air bag. They broke it into two units to make room for the Nike+ iPod accessory.

One thing to pay attention to on the Pegasus 07... it has been getting poor reviews on outsole durability. Nike, for the first time on the Pegasus, used "Sticky Rubber"---whatever that is---for the majority of the outsole surface. Turns out it's not holding up too well. Some customers are only getting 1/3 the miles they got out of their 2006 models.

TIP: If you're going to do any high-mileage running in the Pegasus 07, you might shoot small dallops of Shoe Goo here and there on high abrasion areas of the outsole. It will make the bottom of your shoe look crappy, but it'll give you a little more mileage. Just don't make the "dallops" too big (wide), or you create large smooth areas with very little traction.

Good gosh, surely Nike could have come up with a better design than that! Sure does look light though.

Congrats on your win at Wake Forrest. 5:05/mile? Man, that's just not fair. I'm still trying to run a 5K under a 6:08/mile pace.

My next race will be my first 8K; also my first cross-country race. It's September 22nd, at my alma mater, Hendrix College. I've run only one other off-road race and it was a trail run, more rocky and hilly than this. This will be all grass and flat as a pancake. There are course photos here at the event's web site... http://www.runorangecrush.com/

Tell me, how should this terrain affect my speed? Faster? Slower? I have no idea. Also, I'd be glad to read any tips you can give me on how to train for the next couple weeks. It's 3 hours away from where I live so I can't just go run it anytime. Although, I am driving through to Little Rock on the 18th for a Wilco concert. I'm thinking of stopping by there for a workout on my way home the next day.

Hey Ryan:

Yeah the design of the Zoom Forevers could use some work, but I must say they did feel pretty good for that first race at Wake. They are very light for a cross country spike and do not provide as much support as the Kennedy XC. So, when we start racing 10k later this season, I may decide to go back to the Kennedy XC for that reason.

As for your XC race- it should be a great experience, especially on that course. I checked out those pics and it looks like a very nice course- flat, grassy, and dry. It should be a pretty fast course, but racing on grass over 8k may feel different to you. Since it is grass, and not pavement like road races, you may feel like you are putting more effort into each stride, since the soft surface will absorb more of your energy than hard surfaces. As for the next couple weeks of training, here is some advice:

1) Do some runs on grass to get a feel for it. Try some long runs on softer surfaces, and definitely get in a tempo or two on grass. This will help you a lot.

2) If you can't do that, at least try to get some strides on grass, like 100-200 meters. This will help too. Do them in your race flats too.

Hope this helps. Chris and I are always more than willing to answer any question you have!

Yesterday was our first hard interval workout of the season:

On our XC course (grass w/ rolling hills) w/ racing flats:

3x through:
800m @ 2:30 and below w/ 90 sec recovery, 1000m @ 3:06 and below w/ 2 min recovery, 1200m @ 3:45 and below w/ 2:30 recovery.
Then:
On track w/ racing flats:
2x Cut-down 400m (first 200m @ 34 sec, 2nd 200m @ 29-30 sec)

...the goal of the workout was to work on 4:50-5:00 mile pace while trying to remain comfortable and maintain form

I am always joking with my friends, that i run with, that it isnt fair racing against guys half my size. as soon as we hit a hill they take off and leave me in the dust. Well it seems that other guys are experiencing the same thing and they created the perfect race.
a week from sat i will be running in the "Big Man Run XII".
before the race there is a weigh-in and you have to be over 190 lbs. the race is 4.8 miles long with 3 required stops where you have to drink a beer and eat a hotdog. needless to say, there will be no 5 min miles.

on a side note, last night, i ran my monthly 4.2 mile race and took another min of my time finishing in 28 min flat.

Chris/Phill, I also will likely not run the Chili Pepper a couple hours before you guys run on October 13th. Forgot about this recently, but here is a video of my brother and I leading our 4x800meter relay team our senior year to a new CT State record. It's a pretty good video, no audio, but an exciting race overall...I am the lead leg, Phil is the anchor leg...each leg runs 800m(half mile)...enjoy:

Nice. Phil should add a bullet to his resume that says...

"Not afraid to let you build a huge lead, then smoke you on the last lap".

i thought i would give an update to the big man challenge. This race was so much fun. I was one of the little guys at this race, but i was still comfortably over the 190lb minimum. the big man challenge understands that us big guys need to stop and refuel during a 5 miler, so there where mandatory beer and hotdog stops every mile or so. the race started uphill as we ran up winterhill, the steepest hill in somerville(a suburb of boston). im not sure whos idea it was to have a big man race go up a long steep hill, but it was cruel. Once i perfected my hotdog and beer technique the race was smooth sailing. At the first stop I spent too much time eatting the hot dog so i fell back alittle bit. At the 2nd stop i noticed people putting their hotdogs in the beer to make the bun go down easier. once i attempted this my pit stops where much faster. for this being my first big man race i think that i held my own. I finished with a time of 41 min 3 sec, finishing 12th out of 300+. i will def be looking to compete in more races that involve food and beer.

Nice job Nick. There's no way I'd be able to put a hot dog bun in my mouth AFTER it's been dipped in beer. I'd gag. I'd have to used a modified method... take a bite of the hotdog, a quick sip of beer, THEN work it down.

What beer was it? I'm sure it was sponsorship thing, right?

i dont think i would normaly either but in the heat of competition you dont really think about it and all you want to do is get back on the road.
i think the beer was budweiser but i did not really take the time to taste it. my preference would be guinness but i think that would have added another couple of minutes to everyones time.

Hey guys. Its been a while since I looked at this post and honestly, since I've been injured I haven't been too enthusiastic about running. But I just started last Friday and I'm totally reinvigorated! There are five weeks until our Regional Meet and my team has a chance to go to the State Meet this year, so I'm trying to do a "crash course" and get up to varsity speed in 5 weeks. Varsity speed happens to be like 16:30 5k so it's definitely going to be a challenge, and down here in Texas we have some pretty stiff competition. Anyway, if I EVER get a break from school I'll post some knowledge from the Colorado University camp. By the way, Chris and Phil: Good Luck this season, I wish you guys the best out there!

Mon 8/27: AM 6 mile tempo (34:26 mins; 5:44/mile)PM 4 miles steady (22:50 mins; 5:43/mile)

^That BLOWS MY MIND. That pace is disgustingly fast. I want to be at that level.

Yea I've heard about them and seen some ads, but that's about it. I know that they are based off of the very popular and perhaps best track spikes Nike has ever made- the Zoom Jasari from back in the late 90's. I also heard that they are supposed to have a new version of these track spikes soon?! I've seen some prototype pics...ill post them if i can find them again.

Yea...the original Jasari spikes are a very rare find...here's the best pic I could find...they came out in the 90's and are one of the best spikes Nike has ever come out with...

Check out this site too:

http://www.nike.com/speed/genealogy/detect.html

It is basically a history of all of the racing spikes and flats Nike has come out with. The original Jasari is in the year 1996 row. I actually own a pair of the Jasari Plus, which you can see in the year 2001 row.
