Thats pretty cool Barbu. The intense colours are nice and Im liking the ideas. Although I dont know that ankle coller migt be a bit too tight and youd have a hard time sticking your foot into the shoe, that can piss me off, when I need I dont know how much time to put on ZK1s. I could see that amongst the finalists. |

Chris hot rendering. Profile looks great, and the thought is really cool too. Redu that outsole view, I'd make the sole just as sleek and form fitting as the upper. And just let that structure tell the geometric iphone story. And brand that bad boy.
Sara, nice sketches, the cross of the quarter pattern and swoosh is cool. I'm not buying "Nike free/360" without some more tech sketches though. Sweet concept anyway.
Aurelien, best work yet. Congrats. |

Could someone please give me an explanation on how i didnt make the finalists!!
heres my derscription of the shoe:
Inspired by the iPhone. IPLAY is the title given to a series of shoes that will change the way we play sports all together.
The first in the series pictured here is the IPLAY COURTMASTER. The name says it all, a shoe designed to support the
needs of the person who wants to perform on most court surfaces. Whether it be on the basketball court to tennis court.
Playing indoor soccer or out on the raquetball court the IPLAY COURTMASTER will be there every jump, slide, kick, and
step of the way.
The distinguishing feature comes out in the translucent multifunctional strap that serves two different purposes. If high ankle support is a must, slide strap through slot located at the back of the ankle collar and tighten. If the person wants more of a low top with great support, for quick cuts and lateral movements, simply fold strap down across forefoot, snap down, and slide through slot above the arch and tighten. Cushioning the COURTMASTER is a series of I shaped columns that run the length of heel and forefoot uniquely named "I structure". For indoor/outdoor play the composite rubber outsole had been wrapped up the sidewall to increase durability and support.

Thought I may aswell put my entry up. Hopefully I can get some feedback. Looking at it now I think I should have spent more time looking at closer details of the shoe, there's not much going on... Let me know what you guys think...
The iPhone is more than just a phone. It's an iPod, a video player, an internet browser, a camera and more. The iPhone brings together a number of technologies into one hand held device solving the user's problem of carrying numerous objects around in their pockets.
Taking this innovative, multi-purpose design and applying it to a shoe, I have come up with iWork, iPlay. Carrying on the successful collaboration between Apple and Nike the iWork, iPlay is targeted at the younger male ranging between 18-30. Those who have graduated, entered 'the real world' and find themselves with a career dressed in a suit.
iWork, iPlay, like the iPhone is multi purposed. Using a removable strap over the upper it can be worn as a formal, sophisticated shoe in a club or even at work. Or remove the strap and you have a casual running shoe suitable for the gym, a run or just chillin' at the weekend.
Being a shoe that may be worn both as a formal shoe and a running shoe ventilation is an important issue. iWork, iPlay features numerous ventilation areas around the upper.
The strap clips in both sides at the top of the mid-sole secured in place wrapped around the shoe.

Okay... I know KicksGuide started as a basketball shoe market guide, and that's reflected in the visitors this site attracts. But when KG leaves an Artist Series competition open to other categories with a theme like the iPhone, why to voters feel the need to give non-basketball entries such low scores? I know most of us have a soft spot in our hearts for sweet high-top basketball shoe---I know I do---but this is ridiculous. Is a little objectivity this hard to come by?
I am not saying Aurelien's design should not win, but is his design really 2 points better than any other entry this month? I think not.
And Kyle, I think it would have been okay if Admin included your design among the finalists. It's decent. But I don't think it's a sham that you didn't make it. It's much more of a sham (or shame) that a person can't seem to score higher than a 6 around here with a non-basketball design. |

Kyle, thats a nice rendering but I think your not alone with a good job and great effort and still didnt make the finalists. Thats what design is about really tough competition. I think wrapping the outsole will put too much excess weight and if you want to use it for tennis or runnin that seriously counts. Otherwise great job, mabe the opening for the foot is a bit too wide.
Jason, I really like that, shape seems to be on point. Great job, reminds me maybe of a 2K3 low cut, yeah its a bit simple but you could put it this way, the iPhone aint to safisticated design wise.
Ryan you've got a point, personally it doesnt affect me, I think Sarahs work was best. |

Here is what I submitted for the iPhone theme with a short description. I will post some development sketches later:
The iPhone presents a revolutionary interface for the mobile phone. The Solestice Revolution attempts to revolutionize the way footwear is worn and the way the wearer interfaces with the shoe. The foot slides into the mesh sock-like inner. The shoe is then tightened using touch sensitive buttons on the medial. Sliding up the button loosens the elastic bands and sliding down tightens them. The design remains simplistic to the casual viewer a, while concealing this new technology, similarly to the iPhone.

Hey guys, I've re-worked my design, here is another version...exploring a simpler, more geometric TPU wrapping system along with a quick-pull system on the heel to allow a fast transfer into this tight, form-fitting track spike. I also changed the colors up as well, getting away from the white/grey color scheme in my original design.

there are a few good renderings that didn't make the cut, but they're not all i-phone inspired to the point they were probably looking for. i'm guessing it takes more than an apple logo and an i-title slapped on a cool shoe to make it. don't get me wrong, jason, that is a killer concept..how do the air pods stay in place without flying out? |

I was inspired to be a footwear designer because of products like the air raids, foamposite ones, various uptempos, ndestrukts, prestos, tai chi, morf, hyperflight...pretty much all product created in the 90's and early 2000's. Anyhow...my point is, kids today don't have the inspirational product that I once had so what will draw them today...not much.
the industry needs to step up and return to the "risk taking" days..then you'll see how fast the talent appears on their own.
What kid aspires to work on air force one SMUs? |

Wayne: I'm 16 (well 17 tomorrow) but most of my favorite shoes are from the 90s and early 2000s. In fact, I'm not into too much that's come out in the past 3 years at all. I totally agree there isn't much to draw the general teenager to want to design shoes. I wish more stuff like the Prestos or Shox Stunners-a very inspiring shoe design-wise- otherwise known as "risk takers" came out today.
I think the Lebron IV was a design risk because that style hasn't been around since the days of Alphaproject and Flightposite I's. Unfortunately, I didn't see too many people my age buy them; in fact, I'm the only person I know who has a pair.
The problem is that too many kids are into the Jordan nametag or what's cool- even if it's butt-ugly. Also unfortunately, Nike will of course produce what brings in the most money and that happens to be these lack-luster designs more often than not. I'm not knocking the Nike designers (I would do almost anything to be one, they're all super-talented); I bet a lot of their prototype sketches are risk-taking and really sweet, they just have to go through too much and get watered down.
Wow, sorry for the long post. I had to vent my little 17 year old brain.

I don't really see what a lot of the bigger companies have to lose by taking a risk or two per season.

Stephen: Dude Aaron Cooper is the man. If I had VC 2s they would be my favorite shoes that I own designed by him. But I don't yet so I have to go with the Shox Stunner. In that top picture, every single shoe on that wall is in my top 25 minus the Signature Player. Do you know what he's done more recently? I don't know of anywhere I can find out...wish Kicksology was still around.
Wayne: Totally agree on that retro thing killing the need for designers. Then again to bring back some of the best designs from the Golden Years is pretty awesome because I'll get that chance to buy Zoom Flight 95s that I was unable to purchase when they first came out due to me being 5.
I didn't know that about the retailers...mostly because I've never thought about that before. But it sounds like a pretty sound theory. |

"They seem to "know" EXACTLY what will and won't sell...and then dictate those ideas to the shoe companies."
with all due respect, its their job. as i am learning it is fairly b&w for them, this is what sold last season (or at this point last year) and this did not sell. pretty simple. as designers, maybe we see in color/greys, we have to make that vision apparent, though i would still say it is harder for a retailers to get on board with that vision because consumers are not responding to it...
i definitely agree that the bigger fish in the pond can afford to risk more, i remember someone posing this question earlier; should they?
And on the "design ain't dead but it's barely breathing" discussion, no, you don't want to get Tony started. He can go on all day and all night...
hahaha...very clever, that adan shoe was probably a foreshadowing of what is happening now, result of the meeting between what the consumer was asking for and what performance companies have to offer:
consumer: i want a b-ball shoe that i can hoop in yet still looks good with jeans
company responds with a brown basketball shoe which, i think, was actually a decent hoops shoe. that was a risk, a brown basketball shoe? but at that time hoops shoes were still doing relatively well so it was probably less of a risk at that time...
i have already said more than i wanted to...i just think we just have to ride the current rerto wave, while still trying to make waves ourselves that provide an alternative... |

Ade: The consumer needs more time to get "on board"...but the way things are now if an idea doesn't work initially it disappears the following season (instead of being refined)...and with it goes all the credibility. I think the consumer is starting to realize that many of these "technologies" are bogus...

Thank you a lot, i'm very happy and proud for being the winner of this contest, and one of the 10 finalists of the year.
But this is true, we were not a lot of finalists this month, ...just 6. it should be more difficult if we were 10 or more. so, it does not matter, thank you a lot everybody again ! |

Congratulations Aurelien!!!
The fact you won in just 6 finalists could be seen even in another way...maybe Iphone theme was more difficult than previous themes...and you have been able to solve it the best way! Cangrats again to you!!!

i see what you are saying wayne, and I do not necessarily disagree; just that the reality is that retro/sport casual & color material applications are seemingly what has captured the attention of the buying public...there are always compromises to be made at every juncture of the process, so who knows what the original concepts were we just have to keep pushing the proverbial envelope...
congratulations aurelien!!! |

KG admin : please, could you fix some things..? it's just details but i think it must me changed. Firstly, in the black area where my shoe is shown, under the pict, we read "June2007 AirJordanXXIII".
Secondly, on my "artist infos", we can not see that i am the winner of this contest. :)
thank you.
and THANK YOU ALL EVERYBODY so much for your congrats!! |
